Building and finishing a house is, on the one hand, a dream come true, but on the other hand, a heavy burden and the need to make many difficult choices.
Once the walls are standing and we are slowly beginning the “finishing touches,” the moment comes to decide what our staircase connecting the first floor and first floor should look like. How should we arrange them? Is it better to match their covering to the floor, or maybe ignore the idea altogether and just choose one that we like and doesn’t relate to what we have on the floor upstairs or on the first floor?
Interior design already at the stage of finishing can spend our sleep. Choosing the perfect panels, tiles, colors and wall finishes is insanely important in the prospect of continuing to live in the new house. Of course, these are decisions and elements that we can change over time, but issues such as stair coverings can be more difficult to deal with, so it’s worth considering at the outset what kind to choose and whether it should relate to the floor on the first floor and first floor, or not necessarily. However, we must remember that the covering of the stairs should, above all, be practical to use, so we particularly advise against installing high-gloss surfaces, on which it is very easy to slip.
There is a belief and an unwritten rule that stairs are considered an extension of the floor mainly in terms of the covering, which should somehow relate to the floor where they start. However, this does not always have to be a 100% material match. It is enough if we can maintain a single, consistent color scheme for the two elements. There are some people for whom also the door should relate to a predetermined color scheme, although here, especially in recent times, deviations are allowed. However, we must not underestimate the connection between the stairs and the floor located on the first floor. This transition should be smooth and almost imperceptible.
The situation with the combination of the floor on the first floor and the floor on the first floor, along with the covering of the stairs, seems quite simple when dealing with traditional tiling. Of course, we don’t have to put exactly the same tiles on the stairs that cover the surface below them. It is enough that we refer to one of the elements or colors appearing on it. In case of problems, concessions are also allowed, for example, in the form of one, maximum two tones of difference. The problem arises, however, when we have chosen a wood floor, on which, for example, the grain pattern is visible, or we have opted for exotic wood. In this case, we are even obliged to make at least the texture of the materials compatible. If the cost of making a staircase of exotic wood is too high for us, we can resort to a stain, thanks to which we will obtain a shade close to the expected one. Here, however, we recommend the support of specialists.
An interesting solution in the selection of stair covering will be the use of contrast between the floor and stairs. Such an option will certainly give character to the entire arrangement and emphasize the individualism of those living in the space. However, we must be particularly careful here, as too much nonchalance and total ignorance of the colors or materials present in the decor can lead to chaos, in which it will simply be unpleasant to stay.
