Take care of your garden! Home Remedies for Aphids

Aphids are one of the most common pests of plants. This insect can cause the death of many species of plants.

What are aphids?

Aphids are pests of cultivated plants. In the world there are about 3,000 species of aphids, which grow to a size of 2 to 5 mm. The insects feed mainly on young shoots, inflorescences and flower buds. Some aphid species also feed on the root neck and roots.

The symptom of aphids feeding on plants is the curling of shoots and leaves, yellowing and, in time, death of the plant.

14 home sprays for aphids

1. Vinegar

You need to mix vinegar with water 1:10 (1 l of water and 100 ml of vinegar). Add a few drops of dishwashing liquid to this mixture. Pour the prepared solution into a sprayer and spray the plant.

2. Onion stock

To prepare the stock you will need 1 large onion per 1 liter of water. Dice the onions and boil for 30 minutes. Let the stock cool down and then spray it on the plant.

3. Garlic

To prepare this solution you need 3-4 cloves of garlic and about 0.5 l of cold water. Garlic should be chopped very finely and put into a jar, then pour cold water. The solution should be stored for 24 hours in a dark place. Then dilute the resulting liquid with water in the ratio of 1:1 and pour into a spray bottle.

4. Nettle extract

To prepare nettle extract you will need 1 kg of nettles and 10 l of water (can be rainwater). Leave the nettles in water for 24 hours, then strain and pour into a spray bottle.

5. Milk and water

Mix milk and water in a ratio of 1:1, then pour into a sprayer and spray the plant. It is best to use milk straight from the cow.

6. Grey soap

To prepare the mixture, dissolve 20 g of grey soap in 1 l of warm water. Once the solution has cooled, you can pour it into a sprayer and perform the treatment.

7. Dandelion extract

To make dandelion extract you need about 400 g of dandelion leaves and 10 l of water. The leaves should be poured over and allowed to stand for 3 hours. Then strain, pour into a sprayer and spray. Dandelion extract can be stored for about 2 months in a tightly closed container.

8. Baking soda and oil solution

To make the solution you will need:

  • 1/3 teaspoon of baking soda,
  • 1 l of warm water
  • 1 teaspoon of oil.

All the ingredients should be mixed. When the solution cools down, spray the plants.

9. Baking soda and dishwashing liquid solution

To make the solution you will need:

  • ½ teaspoon of baking soda,
  • 1 l of warm water,
  • a few drops of dishwashing liquid.

When the solution cools, pour it into a spray bottle and apply it to infected plants.

10. Baking soda and gray soap solution

To make the solution you will need:

  • ½ teaspoon of baking soda,
  • 1 l of warm water,
  • 2 ml of gray soap.

Dissolve the soap and baking soda in water, let cool. Pour into a bottle.

11. Decoction of dried velvet

Prepare a decoction from the flowers and water – pour 5 liters of water over 1 kg of flowers and boil for about 30 minutes. Cool down, strain and pour into a container with a sprayer.

12. Chamomile decoction

You will need 300 g of chamomile, which should be flooded with 3 liters of water. Boil for about 30 minutes. Strain, cool and pour into a bottle.

13. Potato leaf extract

To prepare the extract you will need about 1.2 kg of potato stems and leaves, which should be poured into 5 liters of cold water and left to stand for several hours.

14. Nettle slurry

Pour about 0.5 kg of nettles into a 5 l container and cover with water. Leave for about 2 weeks, stirring daily. To reduce the unpleasant smell, pour in about 0.5 cup of crushed stone. For spraying, dilute the manure at a ratio of 1:5.

Plants that aphids do not like

Aphids “dislike” certain plant species. Therefore, in order to get rid of the insects, it is worth planting such plants nearby as:

  • lavender,
  • mint,
  • garlic,
  • onions,
  • nasturtium,
  • savory.
