Every gardening enthusiast dreams of a beautiful and well-kept lawn. After all, it is the showpiece of any garden. But how do you care for your lawn? Here are our tips.

Grass height and time of year

When you cut the grass for the first time in spring, cut it to a maximum height of 3 centimetres. This removes lingering grass and also gives your lawn more sunlight.

Longer grass is less sensitive to heat, so cut it to a height of 5 centimeters in summer. You can leave grass clippings shorter than 2 centimetres on the lawn as they will do very well as natural fertiliser. However, if the clippings are longer, it is better to collect them.

In autumn and winter, grasses are also cut at a height of around 5 centimetres. It’s best to do the last mowing in mid-October and then lower the mower blade to a height of 3 centimetres. Remember after the last mowing to take care of the grass before winter. The lawn should be shredded of dead plants, moss and grass clippings to reduce the risk of fungal diseases. This will reduce the risk of fungal diseases.

Water the lawn regularly

It is best to water the lawn later in the evening after sunset or early in the morning by 10 a.m. This will reduce the risk of water evaporation. Outside the growing season, don’t water your lawn too often. When it’s not growing, grass doesn’t need much water. Therefore, in early spring and late fall, it is best to water every other day.

Shaded grass needs less water, but you should pay attention to whether its roots are close to the roots of trees or shrubs. Then it is better to increase the frequency of watering.

It may happen that the lawn has gaps. Then it is also necessary to fill them. To do this, remove dead grass from bare spots, replace part of the substrate with new and sow a special regenerative seed mix.

Proper fertilization

It is best to fertilize first in the spring to improve the condition of the lawn after the winter and to stimulate grass growth. Grass fertil izer used in spring should be rich in nitrogen.

You should also fertilize the lawn in summer because that is when it is most vulnerable to drying out. To strengthen the lawn before winter, fertilize with phosphorus and potassium fertilizers in autumn.

When choosing the right fertilizer, take into account the condition of the lawn, the grass species and the soil conditions.

What is the best type of grass?

In addition to the most common grasses for a lawn, good choices include:

– meadow grasses – they flourish, and with them you can create a flower meadow in your garden

– sports grass – this is a very good option especially for heavily used lawns but also for home gardens.

There are also other types of grass, such as fodder grass and ornamental grass, but these are designed for purposes other than your home lawn.

Weed control

Preventing weeds is best done in early winter and summer, before they have a chance to develop root systems. It is a good idea to think about weed control before you lay a lawn. Special herbicides can help, but remember that the soil should have a one-month no-use period after using such products. If there are a lot of weeds on the grass, a new lawn may be the best solution.

There are many weed killers on the market, but the best protection against weeds is a neat and healthy lawn. If it is dense enough, it will take away the weed seeds’ access to sunlight and limit their space to germinate.
